Can body hairs be used for hair drug tests?

Updated: Aug 1, 2023

Drug testing is common in various fields such as employment and law enforcement. One of the most reliable methods of drug testing is the hair test.

Traditionally, head hair has been the primary source for collecting hair samples in drug tests. However, the question arises in the case of hair follicle drug tests, can individuals with minimal or no hair on their scalp still undergo this particular type of drug test? Can body hairs be used for hair drug tests?

What if you have no hair on your head?

A hair drug testing is a common method used to detect drug use over an extended period. Unlike other testing methods, such as urine or blood tests, hair drug testing can detect drug use up to 90 days prior.

Hair follicle testing works by analyzing a sample of hair, typically 1.5 inches, and 90-120 strands of hair are taken from the crown of the head, but donors who have little or no hair on their head can alternatively use body hairs for the hair test sample, which can be taken from the face and underarms.
